Stem cell clinic market data
The U.S. stem cell clinic market in numbers
How many clinics there are, where they are, what patients pay, and how fast demand is growing. Every figure on this page comes from a published study or a government source. Updated October 2026 with the latest figure available for each.

Number of clinics
How many stem cell clinics are there in the United States?
In 2021, Professor Leigh Turner of the University of California, Irvine found 1,480 businesses operating 2,754 clinics that sell stem cell treatments directly to patients. Five years earlier the count was 351 businesses and 570 clinics.
The study states that the United States has more of these clinics than any other country. As of October 2026 this is still the most recent national count we have found.

States with the most clinics
Number of clinics in 2021
These three states hold 990 of the 2,754 clinics, which is 36% of the national total.
Where the clinics are
Three states hold more than a third of all clinics
California, Texas and Florida each have more than 300 clinics. In these states a patient can choose between many clinics within driving distance.
In a crowded metro area, the clinic a patient has already seen online, and already trusts, gets the consultation.
What clinics sell
Most clinics market stem cells for pain and joints
Of the 1,480 businesses in the 2021 study, more than 85% market stem cell treatments for pain. More than 46% market them for orthopedic diseases and injuries, and more than 22% for sports injuries.
This is the same patient group for almost every clinic: adults with joint, back or sports-related pain who are looking for an option other than surgery.

What patients pay
Patients pay about $5,000 for one injection, out of their own pocket
Researchers contacted 273 U.S. clinics as a patient with knee osteoarthritis and asked for the price of one stem cell injection. 65 clinics gave a price.

Insurance does not usually cover these treatments, so the patient pays the full price. That is why patient screening matters. A consultation with someone who cannot pay, or who expects insurance to pay, costs your physician time and produces nothing.
Demand
How demand for stem cell treatment is increasing
The patients most clinics treat are older adults with long-term pain. The population aged 65 and over grew 16.2% between 2020 and 2025, and the latest CDC survey shows chronic pain rising.
U.S. adults with chronic pain
Share of all adults, CDC National Health Interview Survey. 2023 is the latest year published.
Adults whose pain often limits life or work rose from 7.4% to 8.5% in the same period.
Chronic pain rises with age
Share of adults with chronic pain by age group, 2023
More than one in three adults aged 65 and over has chronic pain.
Adults with osteoarthritis
About 33 million U.S. adults have osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis.
Adults aged 65 and over today
Census Bureau estimates released in June 2026 count 64.6 million Americans aged 65 and over, up 16.2% since 2020. The number of children fell 2.4% in the same period.
Adults aged 65 and over by 2034
In 2034 adults aged 65 and over are projected to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history.
Market size
The wider regenerative medicine market is forecast to grow 15% a year
IMARC Group values the United States regenerative medicine market at $12.0 billion in 2025. Its forecast for 2026 to 2034 is growth of 15.12% a year, to $45.3 billion.
This figure covers the whole field: stem cell therapy, biomaterials and tissue engineering, in hospitals as well as clinics. Forecasts from other research firms differ. We show it as a direction, not as the size of the clinic market alone.

New in 2026
What changed for stem cell clinics in 2026
New state laws
Georgia, Tennessee and Wyoming passed laws in 2026 that let physicians offer stem cell therapies the FDA has not approved, under set conditions.
Adults aged 65 and over
The Census Bureau's June 2026 release counts almost 9 million more Americans aged 65 and over than in 2020.
FDA warning letters to stem cell businesses
Two examples from 2026: in February and August the FDA sent warning letters to stem cell businesses in Nevada and Arizona, citing treatment claims in their marketing.
What this means
What the data means for your clinic
The patient group is growing
The population aged 65 and over grew 16.2% between 2020 and 2025, and more than one in three of them has chronic pain.
So is the competition
There are almost five times as many clinics as there were in 2016. Patients compare clinics before they call.
Each patient is worth thousands
At about $5,000 for one injection, a small number of extra patients each month changes your revenue.
